Why this blog?
Because what is portrayed in the media and which transpires in the general public's mind is that Africans flee their home countries for the USA, Europe, Asia or even within Africa, only to live in hardship abroad. The reasons: lack of or low education, poor language abilities for those in countries where the language is different than their original ones, legal status in limbo... Therefore they are mostly expected to stay confined into low level and odd jobs. Though these jobs provide for those doing them, the reality is very different for many others who overcome the obstacles to reach for higher grounds. This is where young Africans would learn about others' achievements and be inspired to do the same. Those looking for talented and ambitious Africans will also find a rich database to dig in. This site is interactive and all Africans are invited to honestly share their stories to show the side that some media never cover.

Tenemba Conde: From Hair Braiding to Accountant

tenembaconde@yahoo.com

Tenemba came to the US from Guinea (West Africa) as a student in 2002, and as a French speaking person, started her English courses at St Joseph University in Philadelphia, PA. She then transferred to The Fox Business School of Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. With the bad economy in Guinea and the extended family needs, attending Temple was no easy decision for Tenemba’s family, as it meant $50,000 investment. Tenemba had to work long hours in a hair Salon to help support her family and for her Tuition. This commitment to her education and hard work paid off when Tenemba got hired as an accountant by JG Wentworth-a financial firm focused in debt settlements- right after graduation in 2007 with a Bachelor’s in accounting. After two years, Tenemba got another opportunity as a Grant Payment Coordinator with CFS, the top financial firm specialized in Pharmaceuticals Clinical Trials Payments located in a Philadelphia suburb.
Tenemba plans to undertake another challenge next year by going for her Master degree in Taxation. To her, the sky is the limit. She believes that one can really change their lives through hard work and courage. Tenemba is a married mother of two beautiful kids.

  1. I admire her courage and strong determination. She was able to achieve her dreams and she is now a successful accountant. Dream big because nothing is impossible if you make that dream happen.

  2. Tenemba Conde was a great student at Community College of Philadelphia and I took ESL with her. I knew one day she would be a great professional. Having a Master's degree in the United States means a lot, therefore I will keep her in my prayers in order for Ms. Conde to achieve more dreams for herself and her beautiful family.
